I met Lance Bachman at one of his businesses, 1SEO Digital Agency, where we talked about marketing and business operations. Lance has been doing his marketing digitally for over 20 years and although he owns 5 other companies, what he loves most is marketing. Lance has acquired other businesses and even sold some in the past, but he has no intention of selling 1SEO Digital Agency, he said.
We then talked about his history in marketing, dating back to his days as VP at YellowPages.com. Back then, the online Yellow Pages had insane traffic. The early days of Local Search were so much fun that we went back in time talking about Yellow His Page online, City Search, and other players from the early days.
Lance then said, “Nobody likes a winner,” adding, “I'm a winner.” It was a good line.
1SEO Digital Agency mainly focuses on local and the rest on e-commerce. 1SEO Digital Agency has a high volume of recruitment efforts and has two full-time recruiters hiring at any given time. So they know that the only way to scale is to keep hiring. Hiring isn't cheap, but it is a cost of doing business.
Lance and his sister built the company from scratch and now have about 150 employees. When he was in his agency of about 15 people, one of his employees asked him where he could go from there, where his job growth was. Ta. That's when Lance decided to grow up.
And we are growing by increasing efficiency, and having systems in place is essential for growth. In fact, Lance stepped down as his CEO several years ago to focus on the marketing side and let the new CEO grow the company.
This growth wasn't exactly visionary. This was done to give more opportunities to those who work for him. The company has no debt and only has four sales representatives. All sales leads are inbound.
It was great to talk business with Lance and we compared some notes.
Lance is so passionate about his staff, his team and his employees and it's a real pleasure to see that.
