Thousands of us started side hustles during the pandemic. However, only a few of us were able to turn them into successful and profitable businesses. Let me tell you how I became one of them.
When the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic occurred in 2020, my life changed in an unexpected way. Like many others, the national lockdown forced me to put my career plans on hold, giving me an abundance of free time.
During this difficult time, I came across a resin kit that my sister had gifted to me many years ago. I was bored so I decided to open it. By combining pressed flowers and leaves with resin, I felt an incredible amount of joy and fulfillment in making things.
I started creating unique gifts with deep meaning. After all, flowers have their own meanings, and I used them to convey messages of love, remembrance, and good luck.
It didn't take long for these pieces to become more than just beautiful objects. In a time when physical distance was a reality, they became a sign of heartfelt connection. As demand grew, I felt I had to turn my side hustle into something bigger.
We registered Emma's Cotswold Crafts in September 2020. Sales began on Amazon in October. What happened next was something I never expected. Soon, with her 20 pound resin kit that her sister gave her, Over £100,000.
Accept Amazon Handmade
Initially, I thought the lockdown would be a barrier to sharing my craft. With local markets and craft stores closed, I needed a new way to showcase my work, so I started looking for an e-commerce platform.
That's when I discovered the power of Amazon Handmade and its online workshops, tutorials, and advice that helped me navigate the world of online business. What seemed like an obstacle quickly turned into a blessing in disguise.
Amazon's vast influence as an e-commerce marketplace has given me the opportunity to share my work with a global audience. With 90% of his sales shipped by Fulfillment by Amazon, my startup grew an incredible 140% year over year in 2022.
My most memorable day at work was the day I transferred to my first division. We had to move furniture and empty boxes, so it was very busy. Only late at night, when everything was ready, I walked back into my new workshop space and had a moment of pure pride.
Finally, I realized that I was really doing this and took the biggest step yet to grow into a full-fledged creative company. I felt an overwhelming sense of accomplishment and excitement for the next chapter.
Advice from the creative field
Sometimes unexpected turns in life lead to surprising discoveries. The satisfaction of working in the creative industry is very rewarding, but you must be prepared to put in more hours from a normal he-9 to he-5 o'clock.
Looking back, the advice I would give to my younger self is to start this creative journey with confidence early in your career.
With all the industry support from companies like Amazon Handmade, along with grit and determination, a successful career in the creative industries can become a reality. Here are some tips from the creative field.
- Embrace versatility: As a creative business owner, you'll wear many hats. From marketing to accounting, you need to run these departments with an open mind and a desire to learn. Each skill learned contributes to success. If you're having trouble, reach out to your support system for help.
- Feedback is golden: Don't shy away from customer reviews, even if they aren't always positive. Criticism can be your greatest teacher and lead you to improvements that will move your startup forward.
- Passion breeds persistence: Passion is one of the most important factors to get started. Building an entire organization requires dedication, passion, and hard work. I still get excited about going to work every day and making custom items for people. It's truly an honor to be able to care so much about my work.
Create a fulfilling future
I was worried that turning my hobby into a full-time business would change my feelings about working in a creative field. As a matter of fact, I wouldn't change it for the world.
Other industries may offer greater financial rewards. However, working in a creative environment can give you a sense of job satisfaction and commitment, which are valuable things to gain from your career.
As we look to the future, we envision Emma’s Cotswold Crafts becoming an internationally recognized brand synonymous with unique handmade treasures. We would like to expand into the European market.
I would also like to partner with brick-and-mortar businesses who would like to stock my products. I have a growing team of dedicated artisans and I can't wait to see where this adventure takes me.
My journey from hobbyist to thriving small business owner has taught me that with perseverance, adaptability, and a little bit of invention, dreams can become reality. So whether you're just starting out or are well on your way, don't forget. Your creative journey is your own.
