Alan Shearer has surprised fans by naming a front six for England's Euro 2024 campaign.
We may be entering the final stages of the season, but many are already focused on the tournament in Germany and the Three Lions' hopes of finally ending their long wait for a silver medal.
Gareth Southgate is blessed with one of the best teams in Europe, but that also comes with selection issues.
And Shearer believes the England manager should choose a new approach and reward Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins' excellent performance.
The Newcastle legend turned pundit told The Athletic: All of these players have had great seasons and make up five of the best front sixes in world football.
“However, there is still one position in the team that is up for grabs. We have another viable option and we would like to add that to the mix. I don't think Gareth will take this approach, but that's just the way it is. There are circumstances where England need it.”
“Play Ollie Watkins in the number 9 role.'' Kane can move back into the number 10 space, but it's a natural part of his game, and he's the creator of England, Tottenham and Bayern Munich. Everyone knows that it plays a very important role.
“Bellingham will play deep in midfield alongside Rice, with Foden and Saka still cutting in from wide.
“Yes, it will be a first as they have never shared the pitch for England, but Watkins has looked like the most improved player in the Premier League this season.”
“He has already scored 16 goals in the league, with 11 games remaining, the highest in his return to the top flight. This is already the season of his life.
“Some of the credit for that has to go to Unai Emery, who seems to have instructed Watkins to do most of his work between the width of the penalty area.” No genius, but certainly good. To go. ”
Shearer added: “I always say the one thing defenders hate the most is running back into their own goal.”
“Watkins does exactly that because he's always running in behind them and they're a nightmare to play against.”
“There's a bit of Jermain Defoe in his game. He's very smart in his movements, good on his feet, quick and always trying to find space in the box.”
