From surviving the rising cost of living to setting big goals, earning money on the side in addition to your main source of income is becoming increasingly popular among Australians.
According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS), around one million Australians currently have side jobs in everything from delivery driving to freelance creative work and even dog walking. And they earn as much as $52.60 an hour, according to Preply's research on average hourly wages for side hustles in Australia.
But this Australian is making big bucks using what he was born with: his voice.
Kate Reynolds says she banks between $3,000 and $8,000 a month from her voice acting work without ever leaving her Sydney home. And this year, she's on a mission to hit six numbers with her side hustle.
Kate, a writer by trade, worked as a radio writer, writing commercial scripts and reading demos before clients booked voice actors. Unexpectedly, clients started asking her to lend their voices to their advertisements.
My first side hustle
“[That was when] “I started thinking that maybe I should take this more seriously,” she said.
This is her first side hustle, she said, recalling her previous attempt to sell handmade wall hangings during the lockdown. “I think I sold six, but I probably lost money on that project!”

But in 2021, she listed her first demo on the creative marketplace Fiverr. The original intention was to ultimately pursue expression through agents. But she has had so much success that she didn't need to.
“I've never been just a 9-to-5 girl,” Kate said. “I'm a big believer in multiple income streams.”

This time, it was maternity leave that prompted Kate to consider a side job.
“Having a side job has allowed me to slowly return to work at my own pace,” she said. [my son] When he sleeps or when his husband takes him out. It took the pressure off me to go back to formal work and I got to enjoy my precious days with little Gumnut!”

“The months I make the most money are usually the months I get big orders, like audiobooks or big e-learning courses. I think January is my slowest month. My biggest month is usually November. is.”
Kate returned to her full-time job part-time last year, but said her side hustle gives her “the best of both worlds.”
She “made over six figures in total income in the last fiscal year,” but that wouldn't have been possible without her voice acting work. Kate is currently starting a podcast called Six Figure Salary, where she chronicles her journey to earning a six-figure income with her side hustle. Kate's best advice for anyone looking to start a side hustle is to know and value your worth. “If you work in vain, you will burn out quickly.”
