TikTok's Creative Program Beta has fully transitioned to the Creator Rewards Program and the Beta has ended. In a blog post on March 18, TikTok detailed how creators' earnings will be calculated through this new program.
This new creator rewards program focuses on long-form content longer than one minute. We reward creators financially based on a revenue per mile (RPM) model.
How does TikTok calculate RPM?
Previously, TikTok's RPM calculation was vague. However, TikTok has provided a bit more clarity on its four core RPM metrics: originality, watch time, audience engagement, and search value.
Viewer engagement is all about video likes, comments, and shares. Watch time is based on a new formula that takes into account both the video's total play time and completion rate.
Search value rewards creators based on the number of users searching for content like theirs. Creators can learn more about their search value with the new Creator Search Insights SEO tool, which debuted on March 18th.
Originality is a little more vague. TikTok says it refers to high-quality content that is “unique to creators” and showcases “their perspectives and creative thought processes in ways that resonate with their community.”
TikTok has also “enhanced” the app's dashboard to provide more up-to-date analytics on RPM, qualified views, estimated rewards, and program eligibility. This gives creators more information and insight into how successful their content strategy is actually working.
How do I join the Creator Benefits Program?
The barrier to entry to the TikTok Creator Rewards program is a bit steep. To be eligible, the creator must be at least 18 years old. Creators must also have at least 10,000 followers and at least 100,000 views in the past 30 days.
The news comes at a difficult time for TikTok. As well as facing a possible ban in the US, it has also faced a lot of criticism for its creator funds and lack of transparency regarding exactly how payments are calculated to date.
“Home to a global community of creators and their creativity, TikTok brings people together around the world through content that connects, entertains, and inspires,” TikTok said in a blog post. “We remain committed to investing in the best tools and technology to help creators unleash their creativity.”
