TikTok wants creators to care about search

TikTok just introduced a new monetization program for creators, and some of the reward criteria are of great interest to those of us interested in the future of social SEO.

First, the basics: To be eligible for the new Creator Rewards program, creators must be over 18 years old, have at least 10,000 followers, at least 100,000 views in the last 30 days, and have a personal account in good standing. These eligibility requirements are the exact same as those for the now-defunct Creator Fund.
But here's the interesting part: TikTok says its creator rewards program prioritizes “high-quality, original content of at least one minute” and “optimized rewards formula.” Four core indicators: Originality, watch time, search value, and audience engagement.”

Universal Music Group pulls artists from TikTok

Universal Music Group began removing its music from TikTok as of Feb. 1 after negotiations for a new rights deal failed and its current contract expired.
In other words Music from artists like Taylor Swift, Billie Eilish and Bad Bunny will no longer be available to TikTok users.The change is a major blow to the platform, where trends often revolve around popular music.

Instagram is testing surveys in comments sections

Instagram's commenting feature has remained mostly the same for years, but it's getting a fun new feature to boost engagement: Instagram's polls feature, already popular in Stories and DMs, is coming to the comments section of both Reels and Feed posts.
Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg and Instagram head Adam Mosseri announced the new feature in updates posted to their respective broadcast channels.

TikTok Shop opens in the US

After months of testing, TikTok is betting big on e-commerce: The platform launched its Shop feature in the US this week.
Announcing the update in a blog post, TikTok said, “TikTok Shop will bring shoppable videos and livestreams directly to the For You feed across the country, giving brands, merchants, and creators the tools to sell directly through shoppable content on the TikTok app.”

TikTok Shopping was available (and extremely popular) in the UK and some Asian countries prior to this week, and the company first began testing its e-commerce product in the US in November 2022.

Instagram is testing Reels up to 10 minutes long

A new report claims that Instagram is testing the option to create Reels that are up to 10 minutes long.
The test, first spotted by app researcher Alessandro Paluzzi, allows users to create longer Reels videos using Instagram's in-app camera.

Threads expands web app capabilities

Meta announced earlier this week that it was expanding the web version of its popular new Threads app.

Previously, Threads on the Web was like a simplified version of Threads, where you could view users' profiles, but that was it.
After the update, you'll be able to view feeds, participate in posts, and post your own threads from your desktop browser.

Threads adds new features like the “Following” tab

Instagram's Threads app has been around for less than a month, but the platform is already releasing new features in response to user feedback.
Last week, Instagram head Adam Mosseri announced several new updates, including the much-requested Following tab, which lets you expand your feed to a chronological list of posts from people you follow.

Forget short-form video: is text-based social media the next big trend?
Perhaps in response to the release of Instagram threads and the buzz around X (formerly Twitter), TikTok has introduced text posts.
“Text posts expand the boundaries of content creation for everyone on TikTok, giving you a dedicated space for your written creativity to shine – as seen in comments, captions and videos,” TikTok said in a blog post announcing the new feature.

Twitter limits the number of tweets you can read per day

Twitter owner Elon Musk has announced new limits on the amount of content users can view in a day.
In order to address extreme levels of data scraping and system manipulation, we have applied the following temporary restrictions:
– Verified accounts are limited to viewing 6000 posts per day
– Unverified accounts are limited to 600 posts per day

Musk said the change was an attempt to address “extreme levels of data scraping and system manipulation.”

Instagram to release text-based Threads app

Instagram first unveiled its text-based app back in March, but it looks like it's finally set to release its Twitter competitor on July 6th.
Instagram describes Threads as a “text-based conversation app” and calls it a place for “community.” [to] Let's come together to discuss everything from today's hot topics to tomorrow's trends.”
Social media sleuths first discovered the Threads app on Apple's App Store, but Instagram also hid other clues about the app.

TikTok stops offering BeReal clone

TikTok no longer appears to consider BeReal a threat: TikTok Now, a BeReal clone introduced just nine months ago, has been officially shut down.
News of the changes will be communicated through notifications sent to users around the world.
