Is AI good enough to replace high-paying jobs today?
OpenAI CEO Sam Altman said that more than 100 million users access ChatGPT every week. And Google recently released version 1.5 of its Gemini Pro AI model, which integrates with Google search results to provide users with accurate information. But are these models good enough to replace employees?
Although using ChatGPT in academic and some professional contexts is undesirable and not permitted, many students and workers have been caught using AI and passing it off as their own work. The University of Sydney in Australia recently revealed that it had found over 330 students using artificial intelligence to plagiarize.
The fact that they got caught suggests that AI models may not currently be good enough to pass off their papers as human. But teachers have a hard time proving the use of AI in students' papers because so-called “ChatGPT detectors” aren't always accurate.
AI hallucinations mean we still need human experts
OpenAI said its new paid model, ChatGPT 4, passed a mock bar exam, scoring in the top 10% of students, but a New York lawyer learned the hard way that he couldn't rely on ChatGPT after his filing was found to contain references to non-existent cases.
New York-based lawyer Stephen A. Schwartz used a chatbot to create legal briefs that cited past court cases to argue why a judge should rule in his client's favor. However, it turned out those cases didn't exist. ChatGPT used a phenomenon called “AI hallucination” to fabricate those rulings.
When asked about things that didn't actually happen or don't exist, ChatGPT will sometimes make up events and details in what seems like a misguided attempt to please users. SiliconAngle reports that these hallucinations are estimated to account for around 3% to 10% of responses to users.
For example, Dagnachew Birru, global head of research and development at data science company Quantiphi Inc., asked ChatGPT, “How did Mahatma Gandhi use Google LLC's G Suite to organize resistance against British violence?” SiliconAngle writes. The chatbot responded that Gandhi “created a Gmail account and used it to send emails and organize meetings.” This is obviously false, since Google didn't exist during Gandhi's lifetime.
Because of the risk of such illusions, replacing human experts with AI does not seem feasible at present: in high-paying jobs, the quality of the work an employee delivers may be too important to risk making such mistakes.
AI can be a great tool to assist employees with things like investigations and repetitive tasks, as long as a human expert carefully reviews the output. However, in situations where the consequences of making a mistake are severe, it is best to avoid using ChatGPT: users may become complacent over time or inadvertently miss critical mistakes.
Will AI take over six-figure paying jobs in the future?
So what does the future hold? Will ChatGPT or other AI models become good enough to replace human experts? Goldman Sachs predicts that around 300 million jobs worldwide could be automated by ChatGPT or other AI.
This doesn't necessarily mean that all of these jobs will be replaced, just that there is likely to be some disruption due to AI automation, which the company noted in the report could be a good thing in the long run, since historically, new jobs are created when old ones are replaced by technology, and AI is likely to increase global GDP.
Unfortunately, this doesn't always work out for the better on an individual level: someone who has spent their life breeding and training horses may not respond too enthusiastically to being told that their job is going away, yet the rise of the automobile has created many new jobs for auto mechanics.

“Furthermore, as AI continues to evolve, it's likely that AI will augment, rather than replace, human workers in these roles,” ChatGPT said. “Rather than replacing experts, AI technologies are increasingly being integrated into workflows to improve productivity, accuracy, and decision-making. For example, in manufacturing, AI-powered robots are working alongside human workers to increase efficiency and safety.
“At its core, AI will undoubtedly be a game changer for work, but it's unlikely to completely replace six-figure salary jobs. Rather, the most likely scenario is that AI and humans will work together synergistically, leveraging the strengths of each to drive innovation and productivity in the workplace.”
