A software engineer from Bengaluru and a digital marketing executive from Hyderabad were arrested by the North Zone Task Force team along with Gopalapuram police in Hyderabad for selling IPL tickets on the black market. The duo will buy tickets in bulk through multiple email IDs and sell them at high prices on a WhatsApp group for cricket fans, officials said.
Chittoor Ramana, 27, a resident of Bengaluru, and Nyalakanti Samuel Susheel, 29, a resident of Hyderabad, participated in the match between Sunrisers Hyderabad and Royal Challengers at Uppal in Hyderabad on April 25. He was found in possession of 101 IPL tickets for Bengaluru matches.
“Ramana, an engineer, was arrested by the Chennai Police on similar charges during the ODI World Cup. He met Samuel through a WhatsApp group for cricket fans and considering that he was in huge demand during this IPL season. So, we have come up with a plan to sell black tickets,'' explained S Rashmi Perumal, DCP, Commissioner's Task Force.
They will target several cricket-related WhatsApp groups with around 1,000 members from across India. Members discuss availability of matches and tickets booked online. “Ramana’s plan was to obtain the tickets through a common group and pass it on to his accomplice Samuel through another email ID. Samuel then redeemed the QR code at a redemption center in Hyderabad and sold it on the black market. Tickets will be sold to patrons on Facebook and will be further promoted on Facebook and Instagram,” the DCP explained.
As per the IPL authorities regulations, each individual can get up to 4 tickets. However, these men managed to obtain tickets in bulk using multiple email IDs.
“We have also noticed that the public is being fooled by the lure of easy money and is indulging in black market marketing of IPL tickets. These acts are illegal as per the law and are subject to penalties and penalties. are requested not to purchase tickets that are being sold illegally to discourage such activities,” the DCP concluded.
