I grew up on the southwest side of Fort Worth, off McCart Street. I have lived in Fort Worth for most of my adult life, but it wasn't until I moved to the Historic Southside in 2019 that I felt a deep connection to building community.
In recent years, my passion for digital marketing and building authentic connections with people has driven my career in community engagement through Fort Worth's Ronald McDonald House and Rooted.817.
As a millennial and a creative by nature, I am looking forward to learning and growing in my Southside neighborhood. Get your creative juices flowing with a cup of black coffee or snap a quick photo for your Instagram story at one of the many murals.
As new development continues to flood Rosedale Street, one wonders what the future holds for this area. I think it's great for businesses to come to our area, but I would like to see these businesses invest in their neighborhoods and intentionally give back to their neighborhoods.
Don't get me wrong. I love where I live and the opportunity to make lasting connections with people. But what is the point of building communities if we ignore marginalized groups and their expressed needs as a way to obtain a better quality of life?
People of my generation believe that we are responsible for how we build our communities. We support family-owned businesses, explore farmers markets, and get involved in service-based organizations like Beta Mu Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha and Sorority, Inc., of which I'm a proud member. and share resources to address unemployment and food. anxiety.
I think moving to a new community, different from the one you grew up in, and learning to be willing to serve that community is an important chapter in the book of “coming of age.” That Southwest Side girl is still in me, but it's my love for the city of Fort Worth that led me to grow up on and for the South Side.
If you want to use a space, you have to learn it and respect it. What does it mean to respect Southside spaces? It means getting educated and investing in urban development programs, connecting with volunteer organizations, sharing your time, treasures, and talents for the betterment of community members, and making sure everyone means prioritizing quality of life.
