The iconic Maxwell Street Market will return to its original location in Chicago later this month, the city announced in a press release.
The market will return to Maxwell Street for the first time since 1994 and will be held on the last Sunday of each month throughout the summer, officials said.
“Maxwell Street Market has been a Chicago tradition for more than a century. It not only promotes entrepreneurship, but is also critical to small businesses, including artisans, artists, farmers, restaurateurs, and resellers. “This project provides a unique opportunity for people to grow,” Mayor Brandon Johnson said in a statement.
The market will be located on Maxwell Street between Halstead Avenue and South Union Avenue, officials said. Retail and food outlets will also be located on Union Avenue between Rochford Street and Liberty Street.
Live entertainment, cultural programming, and a variety of food vendors and retailers are located on the market grounds.
The city moved Maxwell Street Market from its original location in the mid-1990s to accommodate the University of Illinois at Chicago's campus expansion.
The market once consisted of a total of nine city blocks and was best known as the birthplace of Chicago blues music and a variety of iconic foods.
It was depicted in several iconic movies, including “The Blues Brothers.” Live music is a big part of the market's lifeblood, and musicians like Muddy Waters honed their skills at the event.
The market moved to Canal Street starting in 1994 and then to Des Plaines Avenue in 2008, officials said. It has now returned to its original location, and the city will announce the opening date on Thursday.
The first market will be held on May 26, and will be held on the last Sunday of every month except September 1, officials said.
