Police in a new Tigard neighborhood are trying to track down a serial vandal and have released surveillance footage taken from a resident's driveway.
Police said the incidents occurred near Southwest 150th Avenue in Tigard, between Southwest Beef Bend Road and Southwest Bull Mountain Road, and near Jean Louise Road at Southwest Roy Rogers Road.
Surveillance camera footage shows a slim, young man scanning the neighborhood before entering an unfinished home.
Jim Delmore, construction manager for Stonebridge Homes NW in Lake Oswego, said the first building was hit on May 2 and the vandalism continued for a week and a half. During that time, more than a dozen homes across multiple construction companies were damaged, with Stonebridge suffering an estimated $80,000 in damages, Delmore said.
“We had to rip out the downstairs floors, carpet, drywall, cabinets, countertops and most of the insulation and redo everything,” Delmore said.
Delmore estimates the total cost will be in six figures, including damage caused by other contractors. Although the vandalism was widespread, Delmore said the demolition work was not carried out by anyone with the professional experience.
The search for vandals is handled by the Tigard Police Department's Commercial Crimes Unit, which specializes in investigating crimes against local businesses. The unit is funded through taxes from license fees paid by businesses in Tigard, according to its website. Delmore said the program puts Tigard ahead of other cities in solving commercial crimes.
“It's important to have police officers out there protecting the small businesses in our communities because it's not Intel or Nike that runs our communities, it's all the small small businesses,” Delmore said.
