Acting icon Miriam Margolyes has revealed how much she actually makes from creating personalized videos for her fans on Cameo.
The 83-year-old star is famously outspoken in interviews, from telling Harry Potter fans to grow up to swearing at every turn.
She has appeared in films, television and stage in a career spanning six decades, and has become an internet celebrity thanks to the hilarious fan clips she frequently posts to social media.
Appearing on Loose Women on Thursday morning, Miriam revealed she makes a staggering six-figure income from her fan videos.
“Since Covid I've made £365,000 from cameos and personal videos,” she told the astonished panel on the ITV show.
Miriam charges $170 (£135) for each video, which is usually around two minutes long, with options on any topic from advice to happy birthday messages.
Her tomboyish videos are intended to add to her estimated net worth of around $6 million (£4.7 million) and help fund her care in her retirement.
The “Age of Innocence” actress continued, “I'm going to need a caregiver at some point. I want to be comfortable and I want my caregiver to be paid properly. But it's because I want to make money and they pay me.”
Presenter Kay Adams jokingly asked: “You'd do anything for money, wouldn't you?”
Miriam, never one to mince words, replied, “I don't eat anything. Is it okay to say something like that?”
“No,” the host replied, causing the panelists to erupt in laughter, with the Harry Potter legend hastily adding: “Oh, I get it, I don't eat excrement.”
However, this isn't strictly true – she previously revealed that she was offered £500,000 by Marvel to star in “a show about witches”, but turned it down – clearly, the wizarding world is where she draws the line.
Fans were concerned last year when Miriam shared on social media that she had been hospitalized with a chest infection.
The Olivier Award-winner shared an update on Facebook at the time, saying he was happy to be “resting” and thanking the “excellent doctors and nurses” who had looked after him.
She has now recovered from her illness and was in top form when she appeared on daytime TV to promote her autobiography.
“I don't care if it's cancelled,” she said of concerns over her second book. “There were parts that were removed by the legal team because I said things that were defamatory.”
Miriam added: “I think as I get older I'll be more forgiving, but I've always been rude and outspoken. That's just the way I am.”
