George Conway, a conservative lawyer and critic of former President Donald Trump, is launching a six-figure attack on a Republican candidate who lives in his own neighborhood.
Conway's Anti-Psychopath PAC launched a new ad campaign Thursday highlighting Trump's “mental unfitness for office.” The ads will air for two weeks on Fox News, ESPN and the Golf Channel in the Bedminster and Mar-a-Lago areas.
The 60-second cable TV ad begins with Conway telling viewers, “Donald Trump has never been sane,” before showing a montage of former presidents superimposed over an image of Trump's brain.
“Donald Trump wanted this election to be all about mental health,” George Conway said in a press release. “And we're OK with that. Trump has been behaving strangely even before he began to show signs of age-related cognitive decline.”
Conway added, “He's never been crazy, and it's only gotten worse as he's gotten older. Especially now that he's the only old man in the race, it's more important than ever that the public focuses on Trump's lack of mental fitness as they make their decision in November.”
Newsweek The Trump campaign was contacted via email seeking comment.
The ad came less than a week after President Joe Biden announced he was dropping out of the race, suddenly making Trump, 78, the oldest candidate in the race. After dropping out, Biden, 81, endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris, who turns 60 in October.
Biden's decision to withdraw from the Democratic nomination came after he came under increasing pressure to do so in the aftermath of last month's debate, where his poor performance sparked much speculation within the party about his intelligence and ability to run for office, long a Republican talking point.
Trump himself has repeatedly attacked Biden over his intellectual ability, calling for his rival to undergo cognitive testing and releasing ads suggesting the president suffers from a serious intellectual disability.
Conway, who was once Trump's contender for two top posts at the Justice Department, launched the PAC earlier this month to “highlight President Trump's mental illness and remind voters of the dangers of returning such a psychopath to the White House.”
“Conway's position is simple: Donald Trump is a psychopath,” the PAC said in a statement.
Conway became a vocal critic of Trump in 2018, even though his then-wife, Kellyanne Conway, continued to serve as a senior adviser to Trump. Conway served as Trump's campaign manager in 2016 and worked closely with him throughout his administration.
She left the White House in August 2020 after a public feud with her teenage daughter. The couple announced their divorce last year.
During the 2020 election, Conway launched the Lincoln Project along with other Republicans opposed to Trump. Earlier this week, the Lincoln Project released its first ad supporting Harris' presidential campaign, declaring the vice president the “warrior” America needs to defeat Trump.
“As a prepared, experienced and tough prosecutor, Vice President Kamala Harris is used to taking on men like Trump, rapists, con artists and criminals,” the ad's narrator tells viewers. “She's used to men like Trump, and she's used to putting them in their place.”
“Kamala Harris will bring something President Trump has rarely seen: justice,” the ad states.
