A CORONATION Street legend is under investigation for allegedly failing to pay a six-figure tax bill.
Beverley Callard, who plays Liz MacDonald in the hit ITV drama, is under financial investigation for failing to pay £215,000 in debts, including £100,000 in tax.
Reportedly, the actress has not been able to repay the huge debt since she received a huge bill when her agency JMBJ Limited went into liquidation last year.
Ms Callard and her husband John McEwan set up the company in 2020, the same year she left Corrie, to handle her salary after leaving the ITV soap.
Despite earning millions playing Liz MacDonald for more than 30 years, her company owes HMRC £98,769.
You owe £51,450 in unpaid VAT and £47,319 in corporation tax.
It also owes trade creditors £2,784.
Liquidators launched an investigation into Mr Callard, 67, and her husband John McEwan, alleging they had failed to pay taxes.
The couple are also being investigated for failing to repay a £114,000 director's loan they took out from the company.
In documents filed with Companies House, the liquidators said: “We conducted an initial investigation into the company's affairs, including seeking information and clarification from the company's directors through questionnaires, questioning the company's accountants, and examining the company's bank statements and other records.''
“This initial assessment revealed matters that the liquidator considered merited further investigation regarding the directors’ loans.
“As a result, the liquidators have undertaken a further review. They are making inquiries with the directors regarding the outstanding balance.
“We have determined that there are insufficient funds to make distributions to creditors at this stage.Due to the ongoing investigation, it is unclear at this time whether there are sufficient funds to make distributions to creditors. is.”
If the director's loan is not repaid soon, Bev and John, who married in 2010, could face bankruptcy.
Bev was previously declared bankrupt in 2012.
The soap star revealed at the time that he was suffering from poor mental health and was caring for his mother, who had Alzheimer's disease, and his pub business went bankrupt.
At its lowest point, her bank card was rejected at stores and she had to borrow cash from friends just to buy food.
At one point, she and John were surviving on just one meal a day.
However, she received a cash injection when she appeared on I'm A Celeb in 2020.
The couple are currently refurbishing a canal boat they bought during lockdown.
In a statement released by Bev's publicist, Bev said: “Many of these details are incorrect, but due to the fact that John and I are involved in a legal dispute, unfortunately we cannot talk about it at this time, but once it is resolved, and I look forward to talking about it and setting the record straight.”
