Marshalltown holds a special place in Lizbeth Garcia Tellez's heart as the place where she was born, raised and educated, and she will forge even stronger ties to the community through a summer marketing internship with the Times Republican. I am excited.
Garcia Telles, a 2022 MHS graduate, recently completed her sophomore year at the University of Northern Iowa (UNI) and plans to earn a degree in strategic public relations with a minor in marketing within three years due to the dual credits she earned while attending the university. I plan to complete it. high school. When she returns in the fall, she will serve as chief of staff for student government and social media manager for the student newspaper, the Northern Iowan.
She received the Servant-Leadership Award from UNI for the 2023-2024 academic year as a student who “worked for the common good while putting the needs of others first.” Garcia Telles will also serve as president of UNIdos, the on-campus Hispanic and Latino student organization, from 2023 to 2024, and will return for a second term in the fall.
García Telles, who has strong family ties in her hometown, hopes to return to her hometown after completing her education.
“I think Marshalltown has always been home to me. It's where my parents are, it's where my family is. After I graduate, I'll either get my MBA and maybe come back here and start a business,” he said. “I want to work for a company,” she said. “I think my connections here have been really great, especially just coming from the large Hispanic and Latino community here. I think it's been really good just being able to connect with everyone…here in Marshalltown. Everything feels great, and it's really nice to see the community come together, especially after everything that's happened here.”
One of the big projects she plans to tackle while she's here is launching a weekly page entirely in Spanish. We don't have a name yet, but we're excited about the opportunity to reach out and connect with the Latinx community. town. She said it was a fun experience because even just making a cold call on the first day gave her a chance to network and introduce herself. She also assists local businesses with special events and general marketing.
