Most consumers have seen health warnings on cigarette packs. And this kind of honest advertising is no accident. It's the law.
And now, as more studies warn of the dangers of big oil, many are calling for similar restrictions on the dirty energy industry's marketing.
TikToker Gigi C (@earthlygigi) posted a video showing a “bizarre” ad for oil giant Shell. She explains that the ad campaign uses an emotional approach and strategically recruits influencers, at one point including Australian celebrity Grant Denyer visiting Shell with her daughter. The situation is depicted.
@earthlygigi Tobacco ads were banned because cigarettes are killing us 🚬 Now fossil fuel ads need to be banned for the same reason ⛽️🚫 Shell is trying to make its fuel “cool.” ” We are running a giveaway campaign on social media with Australian celebrities. The Fossil Ad Ban campaign found that only 10 of these influencers have more than 115 million followers in total. We want to make this type of advertising illegal. #fossilfuels#climateaction#renewableenergy#fossiladban#aussieinfluencer#influencersofinstagram#greenwashing#shellpetrol#shellaustralia ♬Original song – Gigi C
“Shell spends a lot of money to make its fuel look fashionable and family-friendly,” explains Gigi. “upon [the PR agency’s] Their website says they aim to give millennials a way to emotionally connect with Shell and help them forget their prejudices against Big Oil. ”
“And it worked,” she says.
According to ClientEarth, Shell alone generates almost 1.6% of the global carbon pollution budgeted for to reduce global overheating by 2030, with approximately 1.5 billion tonnes of carbon dioxide emitted in 2020 alone. It is said that it is being discharged.
And, as the Guardian points out, despite the company's claims to work to reduce emissions and invest in renewable energy, Shell actually intends to expand its dirty fuels business by 20%. It emphasizes the importance of being aware of greenwashing.
According to Gigi, Shell's PR firm found that with campaigns that focused on emotion, “viewers were 31% more likely to believe that Shell was working on cleaner fuels.” That's what it means.
“That's why Shell is being sued all over the world for exactly this kind of misleading advertising,” says Gigi.
In fact, several cities, states, and countries have sued or sanctioned Shell and other major oil brands for deliberately misleading consumers and promoting environmental policies that turned out to be little more than marketing ploys. There is.
In addition to the lawsuits, some financial institutions, including banking giant HSBC, are withdrawing from new oil fields in an effort to curb the growth of Big Oil.
Commenters were disgusted by the misleading advertising strategy.
“Wouldn't it be more efficient to actually work on cleaner fuels and power and make money in the process?” one person wondered.
”[It’s] Very dystopian,” another agreed.
“I [already] One person said grimly that he had an emotional connection to Shell. “Those emotions are anger, hatred, contempt, and disgust.”
