In this episode of the Affiliate Marketing Podcast, Lee-Ann Johnstone speaks with Josh Sebo, COO of OfferVault.com. They discuss Josh's background in the music industry and how he made the switch to affiliate marketing. The conversation also touches on the importance of staying branded and relevant in a competitive industry, the rise of pay-per-call marketing, and the need for advertisers to understand and reach affiliates across different platforms.
Listen here for all the insights.
The Future of Affiliate Marketing
LeeAnn and Josh talk about how Josh got started in the industry and how LeeAnn found Josh through a podcast that Josh hosts. She asks, “How should brands maintain their presence in such a competitive industry? Right now it's up to the affiliate to choose in terms of where they send their customers. So what do you see as the future of affiliate marketing across the industry and across all the offers and brands that plug into OfferVault?”
Josh says, “Some people believe in branding and staying relevant, and some people don't. I don't think one is right or one is wrong. I think if you're going to be in this space long term, it's important to make yourself visible and be seen by people. So is OfferVault the only place to do that? Of course not. We all know that, but we think we're the best known, biggest, most trusted brand in the space. But when it comes to advertising in general, I think it's really important to be at the forefront of the industry, mainly because there's so much turnover in this industry. There's so much corporate turnover, there's so much affiliate turnover. There's always turnover in this industry. I don't see any downside to having your brand in front of new users as they come in.”
What is the success rate?
“In your opinion, what's the success rate for all the partners that join? You know, out of 1,000 affiliates that join OfferVault, maybe 100 actually become top earners. What kind of success rate have you seen since you started working there?” Lee-Ann asks.
Josh explains, “We don't actually have much to do with the affiliates that come to OfferVault. We're a free, open platform, so to speak, so we don't even ask them to create an account, to be honest with you. They just hop on OfferVault, they don't have to enter any information, they find what they're looking for, and they go to that network.”
“As for whether affiliates will be successful, I honestly have no idea. But having worked in the industry for nearly 20 years, I can say that we're doing something right: we help people find the networks they want. But advertising partners like networks and affiliate programs can answer the question of how successful they are with OfferVault from a different perspective.”
“The honest answer is that it's about as successful as you'll get with any advertising website. It works for some people, but not for everyone.”
Achieving work-life balance
Leigh-Anne asked Josh how he manages to balance work and life in the industry and if he has any advice for busy people listening to the show.
Josh says: “I've gotten really into this kind of thing over the last few years, looking deeper into Buddhism and mental health. It's been a lot of good for me. I think getting work-life balance back depends on who you talk to. There's no right or wrong. We all only have a short time on this earth. If you want to work nonstop, that's fine. That's one way to experience the journey. My co-host, Adam Young from Ringba, loves to work. He loves to create. He loves to lead. And he's good at it. That's how he finds fulfillment. But that's not how you find fulfillment.
“I think it depends on the person. It depends on what's important to them and stuff like that.”
