Nearly a century after World War II ended, new stories about the quiet heroism of ordinary people continue to come to light, and Tyler Perry is tackling the war in his new film. of Six Triple Eightthe story of the only women of color in the Army corps during the war, is Perry's fifth project for Netflix, which she will write and direct, and stars Kerry Washington.
The 6888th Central Postal Directory Battalion contributed to the war effort in a unique way, sorting through a three-year backlog of undelivered mail and delivering it to American soldiers in far-flung locations. In the face of discrimination and in a vast, unfamiliar country divided by global conflict, these 855 women brought hope to the front lines. “No mail, low morale” was their self-imposed motto, and they delivered on their promise to deliver mail (17 million pieces!) and boost morale at a time when America needed it most.

What is of Six Triple Eight about?
Six Triple Eight It tells the inspiring true story of the incredibly brave women who served in the first and only Women's Army Corps of Color stationed overseas during World War II.
On a recent evening at the TriBeCa Film Festival, star and executive producer Kerry Washington Six Triple Eight We had producer Nicole Avant speak about the legacy and impact in storytelling. “Black, white, in-between, male, female, everybody can see themselves in the characters,” Avant said. “Because to me, every story is a human story. To me, it's all about humanity.”
Humanity continued to shine through in unexpected ways during the production. Six Triple Eight“It felt like the women were with us through this process,” Washington said. “We felt their spirit the whole time.”
During filming, a small moment reminded the crew of their place in history. A local resident asked what the team was working on. Learning it was a film about Six Triple Eight, he contributed. “He pulled out a trunk, opened it up,” Washington said. “And it was the actual trunk of my character, Charity Adams. It had her uniform in it, seeds from her victory garden. There were letters and photographs. It was an incredible sight.”

Washington's casting was yet another moment of synchronicity. “We did this series on Instagram during COVID, and we were bored, so we just dressed up,” Washington recalled to Avant. “It happened to be Black History Month and Women's History Month, so we did 'Black Herstory,' where I dressed up as all the incredible black women in history, one of whom was Lena, [a] He is the central figure of the battalion.”
“That was a sign for me,” Avant told the TriBeCa crowd. “I remember calling Tyler and saying, 'This is Kerry Washington. That's it. It has to be Kerry Washington.'” And so it was.
