Bradford Manufacturing Future, a partnership planning a joint approach to decarbonisation, has secured up to £726,729 in Local Industry Decarbonisation funding from the UK research and innovation department, Innovate UK.
The council-led project will identify decarbonisation opportunities in some of the highest emitting sectors, including chemicals, food, basic metals, mineral products and metal processing, which generate 52% of Bradford District’s overall CO2 emissions.
Leading manufacturing partners will work with specialist energy consultancy CR Plus, the University of Bradford and other local manufacturers to profile their energy use and assess decarbonisation opportunities across the sector.
A total of 1,220 manufacturing businesses currently account for 12.6% of employment in Bradford District.
Bradford Council will lead project management, including supporting business engagement and infrastructure development.
The council's partners also include the business-led Neighbourhood Sustainable Development Partnership and local manufacturers Produmax, Texfelt, Teconnex, Denso Marston, Solenis UK Industries and Calbee Group (UK).
Carolyn Escrito, sustainability programme delivery manager at Bradford Council, said: “We are delighted to be leading the Bradford Manufacturing Future Partnership on this important local decarbonisation project, which will minimise waste and use of finite natural resources, helping to build a sustainable, prosperous economy that benefits everyone.”
“Tackling climate change is important to Bradford and it is vital we reach our district net zero target by 2038.”
The Bradford Manufacturing Future project will run until the end of December 2024 and will deliver a decarbonisation roadmap for the district as a whole, an investment prospectus for the district and shared learning between manufacturers in the district and West Yorkshire region.
