Last August, high school football official Trey Cardwell was punched and clotheslined by his head coach, leaving him hospitalized and having trouble breathing. The case has now resulted in a six-figure settlement for Cardwell, who claimed he suffered health damage from the bullet.
On Friday, Cardwell dropped the lawsuit after reaching a $122,500 settlement with the Metro Nashville School District.
On August 19, 2022, Cardwell, who was officiating a high school game in Nashville, was running down the field during a punt when he ran into the outstretched arm of Hunters Lane head coach William Thomas. Ta.
Cardwell claims the impact damaged his windpipe and he was hospitalized for four days after the match. The contact between Cardwell and the coach occurred when Thomas came out from the sideline to point out something on the field.
At that time, Thomas' arm made contact with Cardwell. Cardwell was running down the field, but he didn't seem to notice Thomas' outstretched arm. Thomas has consistently maintained that he had no intention of contacting Cardwell and that he had no intention of contacting him.
The umpire lay on the field for several minutes to recover and was expected to eventually return to the game. That night, while at his home, he developed difficulty breathing and was taken to the hospital.
