There are some trends that pop up on social media that can be confusing and make you scratch your head. But as the old saying goes, there's something out there for everyone. This new live social media trend is definitely for someone or many people. Because apparently people are making up to $4,000 a month doing this.
You might be wondering what people do to make this much money with live streams. They pretend to be artificial intelligence (AI) or non-playing characters (NPCs). They are not teaching people anything or talking about everyday life. The creators simply stand or sit with their hands in the camera's view, swaying back and forth in response to the “gifts” people send them.
The short video app allows you to send “gifts”, which are virtual items that appear in front of your face on the screen, during live videos. These items range from sunglasses and cowboy hats to ice cream and corn.
It may seem like a fun thing to send someone when you're busy interacting with fans, but these “gifts” cost real money, and the creator gets a cut of it. But creators pretending to be AI aren't talking to their followers. They react strictly to the virtual gifts that appear on the screen, as if they were computer-generated characters, say things like “Oh, ice cream” and are loud, as if licking an ice cream cone I'll rub it.

It was revealed that creators were making thousands of dollars a month, and Winter has since admitted that her first AI-masquerading livestream made $700 in three hours, and other creators have also followed suit. I took advantage of it. The trend was popular in TikTok's Asian and anime communities, and has since made its way into the general TikTok feed in America.
While some people may be annoyed to have their feeds filled with AI livestreams, no one is offended by TikTok creators getting creative to make extra money. Another creator, Alluringskull, tried this trend and made around $350 for a 2.5-hour livestream.

All in all, it seems like the creators are having fun while pretending to be NPCs, and making a little extra money on top of it. It's certainly interesting to see what people come up with, even if the whole trend concept is confusing. Earning an extra 40,000 yen a month is not something to be scoffed at.
