Broward County, Florida – When it comes to teacher pay, Broward Schools could take an unprecedented bold move by paying teachers a total of $100,000 by 2025.
Broward School Board member Allen Zeman is pushing the latest proposal, saying the district has the money to do it now and now is the time.
Zeman said the county saw a 9.1 percent increase in state funding, a 100 percent increase in referendums and a 13 percent increase in property values.
The district also operates a $5.6 billion budget.
Zeman explained to Local 10 viewers Tuesday how it would work.
“We created a viable solution that pays teachers a total of $100,000 in compensation. It's pay, it's retirement, and it's health care, and that's what teachers really feel,” he said. Ta.
In addition, teachers' take-home pay will be approximately $80,000, and total compensation for vice principals and principals will be approximately $150,000.
Although the majority of school boards like the idea, the proposal has received a lot of criticism from others about how this can be sustained in the long term, given external factors such as the economy and state funding. It's causing skepticism and concern.
Zeman is asking the new superintendent to create a budget based on the proposal, but the new superintendent says there are still some unknowns.
“On my fourth day in office, you will require me to reinvigorate the entire budget, including cuts to contracted services, which could impact children in ESE. Yes, we do,” Broward County Superintendent Peter Licata said. He will be officially sworn in on Tuesday.
Discussion on starting salaries for teachers has been postponed to next Tuesday. The average starting salary for a teacher in Broward County is approximately $49,000.
