KALAMAZOO, Mich. — For a man who loves baseball, Alex Wojciak has hit the home runs of his life. Digital Marketing students at Western Michigan University will graduate in the fall commencement ceremony. Saturday, December 16th, have a bachelor's degree and already have their dream job lined up. In the new year, he plans to head to Los Angeles to work as a digital video specialist for FOX Sports. He got the job after impressing supervisors during a summer internship with the department that lasted through the fall semester.
“I’m going to be creating a lot of short-form content, whether it’s YouTube shorts, Tik Tok, or compilations from podcasts,” he says. “Obviously I worked hard to get there, but I’m so grateful to be able to do such a great job right out of college.”
During his internship, Wojdylak worked on the digital screening team, creating a variety of content including short and long-form videos, match highlights, and unique thumbnails.
One of the highlights of his experience was “Flippin’ Bats with Ben Verlander“Podcast and Conversation with Former Detroit Tiger's Brother Verlander” Justin Verlander.
“It was really cool. It was huge to have the opportunity to hang out with such talented people,” says Wojrak, who grew up in Lake Orion, Michigan, home of the Tigers.
FOX Sports also hosted the 2023 FIFA Women's World Cup during Wojciak's internship, providing numerous opportunities to create content for a global audience on social media.
“I feel lucky,” he says. “It's an experience I'll never forget.”
A bridge to career success
Mr. Wodylak originally came to Western with an interest in architecture and planned to study civil engineering. He liked the idea of designing and creating, but after an engineering internship he realized it wasn't the right fit. At the same time, he learned video editing as a hobby and became interested in content creation.
“Western University is one of the only schools in the world that offers a digital marketing (and e-commerce) degree, so I made the switch and gave it a try, and I haven't looked back since. “I did,” he says.
Prior to joining FOX Sports, I interned with the WMU Student Affairs marketing team for over a year. He managed the office's social media accounts and created graphics and videos for the accounts. Howarth's business, along with the classes and experience taught by world-class instructors at his college, inspired him to pursue his passion in the big leagues of sports broadcasting.
“My communication and networking skills have improved. Since coming to WMU, I have been involved in several projects that involve speaking in front of others and pushing myself outside of my comfort zone to improve myself. I’ve been a part of it,” he says. “When it comes to networking, the more people you talk to, the higher your confidence level will be. And you'll make new connections along the way as you develop your skills.”
Now, as he prepares to graduate and take the next step in his career, Wojlak reflects on how far he has come personally and professionally at Western.
“Seeing how much I've changed…that's the greatest thing to me: self-growth,” he says. “When we are in challenging situations, that is when we grow. I don’t know if you’ll take me there, so push yourself.”
